The responsible character is determined during episode setup. Give the blue endurance tracker to the character determined by the storybook. Normally a character with a specific trait is determined the responsible character. If there are multiple options, the group chooses one of them. If no character fits the description, the group can choose any character. If the group cannot agree, one of the viable options is chosen at random.

When making the decisions as a group the responsible character breaks ties. Apart from this, being the responsible character does not have an inherent effect, but they are encouraged to read the story texts and manage the encounter deck during episodes.

• During the encounter phase, the responsible character is the active character (and therefore resolves effects on episode cards in play).
