Cards with unified card backs (like Tools or encounter cards) can be face-up or face-down (while they are in play). Unless otherwise specified a card enters play face-up.

A face-down encounter card is referred to as a “retreated” card. (See: Retreated Cards.)

Being face-up or face-down has certain implications:

• Face up: The game text of a face-up card is active. Characters can interact with them as normal.
• Face down: The game text of a face-down card is inactive. Only effects that specifically call out face-down (or retreated) cards can interact with them. Characters are not allowed to look at the front side of a face-down card.

Clarifications:

• Cards can only be face-down while they are in play. However, they can only be interacted with as “face-down” or “retreated” cards.
